The Highlander
36" x 46" Acrylic Painting
by Robin Wethe Altman
This is an original painting of a man I met at the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. Since moving to these Appalachian mountains 3 years ago, I have been intrigued with the history and folklore that's here. These are some of the oldest mountains on our planet. It's here where a lot of Scottish settlers came to begin their life in America. Understanding how these immigrants are the very foundation of American culture is important. The deep and passionate determination of the Scottish nature has become "our" nature as a county. I was able to take a picture of this man, "Billy Beach" and then in my studio, recreate him with my own background in such a was as to compliment his persona. Billy is a dedicated actor who knew how to pose for me in such a way that the muse was awakened. What I love about the look he gave me was that it says to the viewer, "I know who I am, and who are YOU?." I think its a great question that I need to ask myself every day, "who am I and what is it that I stand for as an American?"
